What is phonics?
Phonics is recommended as the way in which young children are taught to read and write. It is a universal system used for teaching the correspondence between letters and sounds.
Children need to learn that sounds are represented by written letters. Once they know their sounds they can start blending them together to make and read words.
Formal phonics lessons generally start in the first year in school (aged 4-5) however a number of nurseries will teach some of the first steps.
Children are normally starting to be interested in some letters, for example the letters in their name, from the age of 3.
